Men's Mountain Shorts & Pants

Shorts are ideal in warm, dry conditions where mobility matters—hiking shorts or mountain bike shorts excel on trails and treks. Choose lightweight pants for cooler or wet days, or when you need Polartec fleece or a water-repellent layer for layering and extra coverage.

Think about activity: a 10–12 inch inseam gives good coverage for hiking while still allowing freedom for pedaling, and stretchy geometries help with unrestricted movement. Look for adjustable waistbands or flat waistbands in athletic or regular fits so you can dial in comfort for long days.

If you'll be doing multi-hour rides, a padded liner with a chamois adds real comfort for 4–6 hour sessions and helps absorb trail vibration. Mountain bike shorts with built-in padding are made for gravity and rough terrain, whereas hiking shorts prioritize breathability and mobility.

Merino wool blends are excellent for all-day scrambling because they manage odor and variable temperatures, while stretch nylon ripstop offers superior abrasion resistance and reinforced seams for rocky approaches. Also consider DWR-treated ripstop if you expect light showers or wet rock.

Look for secure zip pockets, articulated knees, and gaiter-compatible cuffs that make a big difference on technical terrain; UPF 50+ and DWR finishes add sun and weather protection. Models like prAna Stretch Zion II and Outdoor Research Ferrosi are good examples of durable stretch fabrics and practical details for trail-to-town versatility.
