Men's Red Climb Jackets

For severe mountain weather, hardshell jackets with Gore-Tex membranes are the best choice because they prioritize waterproofing and windproofing. They usually feature reinforced construction and hooded designs for full weather coverage during mountaineering.

Plan for a fit that leaves room for a thermal midlayer or insulated jacket without restricting movement at the shoulders or torso. Climbing-specific jackets are cut to allow full freedom through the arms and torso so belaying or leading pitches stays comfortable.

Softshells excel for ventilated, active climbing since stretchy, breathable fabrics boost mobility and ventilation while providing light water resistance. When you need reliable waterproofing in bad weather, choose a hardshell with Gore-Tex, and consider Patagonia’s water-resistant softshells if you want PFC-free treatments for lighter conditions.

For speed ascents, prioritize ultralight, packable shells that minimize bulk and stow easily in a harness or pack. Many speed-focused shells weigh around 200 grams, so aim for that ballpark if the lowest weight is your main goal while still keeping some weather protection.

For cold alpine belays, down insulation gives the best warmth-to-weight, while synthetic fills perform better when conditions are damp or wet. Brands like Black Diamond offer heavier insulated jackets—often 600+ grams—for standby warmth, so pick down for dry cold and synthetic if you expect moisture.
