Kids Yellow' Paddling Clothing

Start by matching the PFD type to your child's age and the listed weight ranges — Type II PFDs give head support for infants (around 30 pounds max) while Type III fits older kids who float independently. Look for weight-based sizing like 33–55 pounds for toddlers or 50–90 pounds for youth and consider models such as the Mustang Canyon Youth V for top comfort in the 50–90 lb range.

For cold water, choose a snug neoprene wetsuit that traps a thin layer of water and reduces bulk; a 3mm-thick suit is a common cold-water choice. The Camaro Flex Shorty or Camaro Ultra in sizes for kids 3–5 feet tall works well as a versatile base layer that still allows movement.

If the trip is mostly splash-prone with short bursts of water, a splash top paired with pants like the NRS Youth Rio (with elastic cuffs) keeps kids comfortable, while sustained rain calls for a full rainsuit. Rain gear made with PU-coated fabrics such as the Helly Hansen Bergen offers better waterproofing and seam reinforcement for longer outings.

Neoprene base layers are useful in chilly spring paddles because a snug neoprene fit preserves warmth without adding bulk, while fleece is ideal for post-paddle warmth on shore. You can combine a merino or Patagonia Capilene base layer under a light fleece jacket to balance moisture management and insulation.

When choosing quick-dry shorts, look for UPF 30–50 fabrics and features like adjustable waists or drawstrings and pockets for small items; Patagonia Baby Baggies are an example that dries fast and accommodates movement. Convertible pants are handy if you expect changing weather or want leg coverage for sun protection, and nylon quick-dry fabrics are the most common choice.
