Kids Red' Hiking Clothing

Convertible styles like the REI Kids Sahara Convertible Pants are ideal for variable conditions because zip-off legs let kids switch between pants and shorts on the trail. Look for quick-dry nylon/spandex with a water-repellent finish and an adjustable waist so the pant works across spring, summer, and fall.

Think about adjustable waists and wide elastic bands to get a snug fit that grows with the child; many kids transition into women's XS sizing. Also check for zippered ankles and roomy geometry so puffy pants can layer over hiking pants without excess bulk.

Lightweight merino blends like Smartwool's active merino/tencel shirts offer breathable, odor-resistant comfort and work well year-round. Synthetic base layers made from polyester or nylon dry faster and wick sweat aggressively, so they're a great pick for high-output days.

A good kids' rain jacket will be lightweight, waterproof/breathable and treated with a durable water-repellent finish to shed light rain. Features like an adjustable hood, reflective elements, and packable construction help it stow easily when the sun returns.

Lightweight fleece layers and puffy pants with polyester fill provide warmth without excessive bulk on chilly trails and cool summer camping nights. Packable options made from recycled shell fabrics and zippered pockets make it easy to stash or secure layers as conditions change.
