Infant Black & Toddler Gloves & Mittens

For an 18-month-old, mittens are often the simpler choice because mittens dominate the 0-2 year range and are easier to slip on. If your child is reaching for sticks or showing more dexterity, gloves or fingered options sized around a 4.5–5 inch hand circumference can provide better grip and tactile feedback.

Measure your child's hand circumference and length and compare to the size guidance—infants 0-12 months typically fit a 4–4.5 inch circumference and a 2.5–3 inch hand length. A snug but not tight fit preserves insulation: loose mittens let cold air in while overly tight ones can feel constricting.

Waterproofing is essential because infants and toddlers spend roughly 80 percent of their time rolling in snow, so a water-resistant shell matters more than style alone. Look for durable shells like 100 percent polyester paired with warm linings such as fleece or Thinsulate and breathable liners to prevent sweat buildup.

Extended cuffs that cover jacket sleeves block snow entry and make mittens harder to kick off; SnowStoppers Kids Waterproof Stay On Mittens, for example, feature extended cuffs plus velcro straps for a customizable fit. Adjustable closures like velcro or bungee cords keep small hands secure without cutting off circulation.

Convertible mittens and side-zip gloves are designed for fast on-and-off transitions—ZipGlove Tie-Dye Colette Gloves use a side-zip closure to simplify dressing, while Stonz Baby Snow Mitts have extra-wide openings that slip easily over jacket cuffs. Both styles trade a bit of traditional snugness for speed, which can be a real timesaver with impatient kids.
