Gray Gravel & Cyclocross Tires & Tubes

It depends on rim type and course conditions. Tubulars glue on and suit firm hardpack, grass, or sand, tubeless clinchers need hook-compatible rims and let you run sealant for lower pressures, and tube-type tires fit standard clincher rims.

For deep mud, go with mud-specific tires like Michelin Power Cyclocross Mud; their rhino-style knobs and spaced studs shed wet muck and improve grip. On hardpack, small rounded knobs or intermediate file treads such as Grifo roll faster and feel more efficient.

For mixed gravel and 'cross courses, 33–47mm widths are common and starting pressures of 25–40 psi improve traction without risking rim strikes. A slightly wider volume gives more cushion on rough gravel while narrower 33mm options favor a faster race pace.

Yes, tubeless-ready clinchers are designed to work with sealant and let you safely run lower pressures, but they require hook-compatible rims to seat and seal correctly. Check the tire’s recommended range since many models list pressure ratings from about 25–60 psi.

Many tires strike a balance by offering lighter casings for lower rolling resistance or added X-Guard layers and bead-to-bead protection for durability. For example, IRC Serac Edge CX targets lightweight racing, while heavier X-Guard or bead-to-bead protected models and Pirelli Cinturato Gravel Mixed favor long-distance durability on varied terrain.
