Orange Flashlights

Headlamps are best for hands-free night hiking and ultralight backpacking, offering wide flood beams in the 100–400 lumen range and very light weights. Handhelds give focused spot beams for distance, while lanterns provide 360-degree campsite lighting at 200–700 lumens for group tasks.

Trail running benefits from a wide flood beam that lights the trail close up and typically uses 100–400 lumens in headlamps so you can see obstacles. Campsite lighting favors flood or lantern-style 360-degree diffusion in the 200–700 lumen range to illuminate cooking and social areas.

Runtime varies widely depending on output and battery chemistry, with rechargeable 18650 or 21700 cells offering the longest overall hours at lower settings. Expect shorter run times at extreme outputs—models like the Fenix TK16 V2.0 push 3000+ lumens and trade battery life for high brightness.

Metal bodies, often aluminum, add durability and help with heat dissipation for high-output lights used around camp, and many share IPX8 waterproofing and 1–2 meter impact resistance. Heavier tactical handhelds and lanterns can weigh 5–16 ounces but provide the ruggedness and lumen output that models like the Streamlight ProTac 2.0 are known for.

Pocket-friendly geometry, a reliable hat or pocket clip, and a low weight under 3 ounces make everyday carry comfortable—examples like the Nitecore Thumb are rechargeable, ultralight, and include a hat clip. Battery versatility (AAA or CR123A compatibility) and a simple output switch for quick access are also useful for daily tasks.
