Blue Tools for Fly Fishing

Straight jaws work best in narrow, brushy creeks under 10 feet wide because they let you reach in tight casts without fouling vegetation. Curved forceps—often in 5-7 inch lengths—give better access for deeply seated hooks, so check jaw serrations and spring tension for one-handed use with wet gloves.

Stainless steel jaws are a reliable choice for rust resistance, while titanium coatings add lightweight durability and can keep a tool under 2 oz. Also consider handle materials like aluminum or nylon and look at construction features such as locking mechanisms that withstand repeated exposure to rocky streams.

Aim for tools in the 1–3 oz range for a balance of function and packability, and go sub-1 oz if you want a minimalist kit—models like the GoReel Pocket tools offer true sub-1 oz options. Keep length and geometry in mind too, since compact forceps still need the right jaw shape to remove hooks in tight water.

Retractors and zingers keep essential tools accessible and off your vest or pack, with many zingers offering retraction up to 36 inches to prevent loss while moving in splashy water. Pairing a retractor with a mitten-friendly clamp such as the Loon Outdoors Rogue Quickdraw Mitten Clamp makes single-handed access easier when you’re wearing gloves.

Many anglers find a good multitool covers common tasks like nipping tippet, removing hooks, and crimping, and models like the Simms Fly Tool combine nippers and forceps in a 1.5 oz titanium package. That said, specialty pliers or hemostats can offer stronger crush strength or finer serrations, so choose a multitool only if you value compact versatility over dedicated performance.
