Yellow Dry Bags

Think about how you’ll carry and access your gear. Dry sacks like the E-Vent Compression Sack are ultralight and meant to nest inside another pack, while waterproof backpacks such as the Simms Flyweight Access Pack offer shoulder straps and compartments for wet-weather hikes; duffels give maximum volume but are bulkier for long carries.

For whitewater paddling you should look for submersible-rated bags that keep contents dry at specified depths and durations; polyurethane-coated models from Watershed and NRS are built for that abrasion resistance. Floating waterproof bags work well for casual paddling, while simple water-resistant options only handle splashes and rain.

PVC-coated bags are common and affordable, suitable for recreational water activities, whereas polyurethane-coated fabrics offer greater abrasion resistance and are preferred for extended whitewater use. Larger bags often pair polyurethane with a nylon base for extra durability compared to vinyl-coated small pouches.

If you’re trying to save weight or organize clothing and a sleeping bag, use a dry sack inside another pack—dry sacks are designed to nest and compress stored gear. Choose a waterproof backpack when you need standalone carrying with ergonomic shoulder straps and compartmentalization for frequent access.

Welded seams sealed with pressure and heat provide the best waterproof performance because they eliminate stitch holes, making them ideal for submersible bags. Stitched-and-taped or glued seams can be fine for lighter, occasional use but generally aren’t as durable over time.
