Green Down Sleeping Bags

Start by matching the shelter weight and low temperature you expect: mummy bags are best when you need warmth down to ratings like 0°F or 20°F, while ultralight quilts and hybrids shine for warm-weather trips above 20°F when every ounce counts. Ultralight options can weigh 1–2.5 lbs and compress very small, so pick a quilt if you prioritize packability and minimalist sleep setups.

For typical three-season use, look at bags rated around 15°F to 20°F—many models are labeled with EN/ISO lower-limit or comfort numbers so you can compare. A 15°F bag with a fill weight near 21 oz gives a good balance of warmth and weight for shoulder seasons, while 20°F options like the Western Mountaineering MegaLite prioritize comfort-to-weight with high fill power.

Fit matters because a too-big bag leaves cold spots and a too-tight bag restricts loft; match torso length and girth to the bag’s regular or long sizing to trap heat effectively. Women’s-specific cuts offer shorter lengths and wider hips for better insulation efficiency, and mummy silhouettes use tapered geometries and narrower footboxes to reduce dead space.

Higher fill power—typically 650–850+—gives more loft per ounce and better compressibility, and many backpacks use RDS-certified, hydrophobic down for moisture resistance and ethical sourcing. Brands like Feathered Friends Swallow UL 20 pair high loft and USA-made construction to deliver durable performance in a lightweight package.

Double-wide bags are ideal for basecamp or car camping when you want shared warmth and space; they’re designed for mild to moderate conditions around 20°F and make overnight logistics easier. These bags trade some packability for comfort and are best when you don’t need ultralight compression sizes or solo backpacking gear.
