Blue Dog Packs & Accessories

Measure the widest part of your dog’s ribcage (girth) and the spine length from the base of the neck to the tail, then match those numbers to a pack’s listed girth and length. Leave enough room for movement, consider extension straps for deep-chested dogs, and look for padded harnesses as found on many Ruffwear packs.

Keep the load at or below about 25 percent of your dog’s body weight and start with very light loads before increasing over several outings. Day packs are sized for water and snacks while multi-day options like the Non-Stop Amundsen backpack offer larger capacity for extended trips.

For cold conditions choose an insulated, water-resistant coat with breathable fabric to avoid overheating, and for water activities pick a PFD that offers good flotation and secure attachment points. Cooling vests from brands like Ray Allen are useful on warm days, while reflective elements help visibility in low light.

MOLLE tactical pouches are great if you want modular organization for treats, first-aid, or camera mounts, and brands like Ray Allen offer specialized MOLLE accessories. Complementary items such as collapsible bowls, water bottles, and treat pouches keep gear accessible, and reflective elements plus ID tag points boost safety.

Proper fit is key. Adjust straps so the pack sits evenly, measure girth to prevent shifting, and choose padded harnesses with breathable fabrics to reduce rubbing; start with short, light-load hikes to let your dog adapt. Inspect for hot spots and consider models from EzyDog or Mountainsmith that use reinforced stitching and extra padding for durability and comfort.
