Green Dog Coats, Packs & PFDs

Start by measuring your dog’s girth at the widest point behind the front legs, then record neck and back length. Compare those numbers to the size chart—sizes run from XXS to large and many items accommodate dogs over 100+ lb; also check belly coverage and adjustable straps so leg movement isn’t restricted.

For cold, wet hikes, a waterproof raincoat like the Fjord Raincoat 2.0 or Monmouth Waterproof Dog Coat is a good choice. Seek ripstop nylon or polyester with a DWR finish, sealed seams, and features like a telescoping neck sleeve and belly coverage, with some coats rated down to around 20°F for colder conditions.

Cooling vests such as the Swamp Cooler Vest are designed for hot-weather runs and backpacking to help reduce overheating on long outings. Lightweight polyester construction and breathable panels keep dogs comfortable, and following care or re-wetting instructions helps maintain the vest’s cooling performance.

Overnight treks typically require a dog pack with roughly 20–40 lb capacity and a snug, balanced fit to keep weight distributed. Models like the Approach Dog Pack and Trail Light Dog Backpack include padded straps, zippered pockets, and adjustable webbing to help stabilize loads without rubbing.

Pick a PFD with wrap-around foam, a sturdy front lift handle, and buoyancy suited to your dog—many pet PFDs offer up to about 50 lb of lift. Options like the Ruffwear Float Coat and Mustang Survival PFD use closed-cell or ensolite foam panels and offshore-ready features, but note pet flotation gear is typically U.S. Coast Guard non-approved.
