Gray Cross-Country Skiing

For groomed tracks or races, classic skis and skate skis are the go-to options. Classic skis deliver gliding efficiency with chin‑high lengths and a flexible arch underfoot, while skate skis are shorter and stiffer for powerful, packed‑snow skating.

Match the boot sole to the binding standard—touring setups often use NNN BC or 75mm 3‑pin systems depending on terrain. Touring boots tend to have rugged outsoles and plastic exoskeletons for support. Asnes models feature quick‑on skins and metal edges that pair well with wider‑base NNN BC bindings for off‑piste touring.

Classic skis should be chin‑high with a springy double‑camber flex for good glide, whereas skate skis are shorter and more rigid for pushing off packed groomed snow. Consider cores made of lightweight wood or composite to balance weight and stiffness.

Skins or ez‑skin tech are best for variable or steep icy climbs—models like the Fischer Excursion 88mm with ez‑skin help when you need traction without constant waxing. Waxed aggressive grip zones work well on consistent groomed tracks, but skins offer more reliable grip in mixed backcountry conditions.

Pole choice depends on terrain: use poles with roughly 3‑inch baskets for powder and wider skis, while small semicircle baskets suit groomed tracks and race setups. Aluminum shafts give durability for touring, and carbon composite poles are lighter for skate and racing efforts.
