Yellow Cots

Ultralight cots are best for backpacking and multi-day treks because they typically weigh under three pounds and pack down very small. Standard cots—like the Kelty Lowdown Cot at 4 lb 12.8 oz with a 300-pound capacity—are better for car camping, rafting, or basecamp where comfort and sturdiness matter more than minimal weight.

If you're tall, pick a model toward the upper end of the 73–82+ inch length range so your feet don’t hang off the end. Side sleepers usually benefit from widths nearer 30 inches rather than the narrower 27-inch options for more shoulder and hip room.

Durability comes from strong frames and heavy fabrics such as aluminum or stainless steel components paired with 600D canvas or coated polyester. Look for reinforced welding, secure locking mechanisms, and protective fabric coatings—features commonly found on heavy-duty models like the Teton Sports Outfitter XXL.

For larger sleepers, prioritize cots rated for higher loads—standard models start around 300 pounds while heavy-duty options go up to 600 pounds. Luxury and convertible cots like the Helinox Cot Max Convertible carry about a 320-pound capacity, while models like the Teton Outfitter XXL advertise 600-pound capacities for maximum durability.

Folded dimensions commonly compress to around 17 by 7 by 7 inches on average, though ultralight designs pack even smaller and heavier convertible luxury models expand those proportions. Weights range from just over one pound for the lightest backpacking cots up to about six pounds for premium convertible options, so consider both packed size and weight when planning storage.
