Gray Canyoneering Helmets

Think about the rockfall risk and how fast you’ll move: hardshells with ABS or polycarbonate outer shells excel in rugged, high rockfall terrain, while in-mold designs prioritize lightness for faster descents or multi-sport use. Hybrids offer a middle ground—roughly 300 g on average—giving more abrasion durability than in-mold without the full weight of a hardshell.

For speed-focused canyoneering you’ll want a lighter in-mold option—models like the Edelrid Ultralight at 178 g shave ounces for long approaches and rope work. Technical, vertical canyons with higher rockfall favor heavier hardshells that push toward the 200–500 g range and trade weight for abrasion resistance and impact durability.

Measure your head circumference and compare it to the typical 48–61 cm size range, then use the helmet’s adjustable dial or BOA mechanism to fine-tune the fit. Prioritize a low-profile shape with extended rear and side coverage so the helmet sits snug without pinching when you wear a neoprene hood.

Helmets with MIPS can reduce rotational forces by up to 40%, which helps in oblique impacts common in falls, and waterproof liners improve longevity when you’re routinely exposed to wet grit. Combine those features with reinforced impact zones and durable materials like EPS/EPP foam plus a polycarbonate shell for the best protection in abrasive, watery canyons.

Good ventilation—typically 10–20 ports—keeps you comfortable on long approaches, while a detachable visor helps shield your eyes from drip and sun without trapping heat. Also look for certified protection (EN 12492/UIAA), quality suspension straps, and models like the Black Diamond Vision MIPS or Smith Summit MIPS if you want a balance of comfort, dual‑sport durability, and BOA fit options.
