Boys' Gray Vests

Insulated puffer or down-filled vests are best for on-slope warmth and can handle sub-zero outings down to about -10°F. The North Face Boys' ThermoBall Eco Vest, with its 600-fill recycled down and roughly 10 oz packability, is a good example of a warm, lightweight option.

Try sizing so there's room for a base layer and a midlayer—sizes range from little boys XS–S up to big boys M–XL and come in regular or slim cuts. Look for adjustable hems and side zippers to add growth room and keep the fit comfortable during active play.

Synthetic insulation like PrimaLoft (100–200g fill) holds warmth even when damp and dries faster, making it ideal for wet or active use, while 600-fill down offers a superior warmth-to-weight ratio for very cold, dry conditions. Consider activity and likely wetness on the trail when deciding between a synthetic puffer and a down-packed vest.

Packable vests are designed to compress into their own pockets and commonly weigh between 8–16 oz, making them easy to stash in a backpack or locker. For example, some insulated models compress to about 10 oz and still provide reliable warmth without taking up much space.

Nylon or polyester shells with a PFC-free DWR and abrasion-resistant fabrics help repel light moisture and withstand scrapes and falls, and taped seams add extra durability at stress points. Models like the Rab Boys' Kinetic 2.0 use waterproof Pertex with stretch for active mobility while many jackets also carry bluesign-approved textiles and a 4–6 DWR rating for reliable water repellency.
