Boys' Orange Hiking Shoes

Think about the terrain and your child’s hiking style: mid-cut shoes like the Adidas Terrex AX4R Mid or Merrell Moab Speed Mid give extra ankle support for rocky, technical trails, while trail runners such as the Salomon XA Pro 3D are lighter and better for faster-paced hikes. Low-profile models work fine for casual, flat paths, and sandals like the KEEN Newport H2 shine in warm weather and water-filled routes.

Buy shoes that leave a thumb-width of room at the toe and consider models offered in extended ranges, such as sizes 13 down to 6, so you can fit different age groups accurately. Also pick options with kid-friendly closure systems—single-pull laces, bungie lacing, or Velcro straps—so the fit stays secure as feet change.

For frequent stream crossings, waterproof or water-resistant shoes like the Merrell Bare Steps H2O or Salomon XA Pro 3D keep feet drier and protect against cold water, while H2O-rated sandals and KEEN Newport H2 sandals drain and dry faster for warm-weather trips. Think about water temperature and how much ankle support you need when choosing between the two.

Look for durable outsoles with aggressive tread patterns and deep lugs to bite into mud and rock, plus a reinforced toe box to protect against impacts on rocky ground. A breathable upper combined with a grippy rubber compound will help maintain traction during wet or slippery sections.

Simple closures like single-pull laces, bungie lacing, and adjustable Velcro straps let kids get shoes on and off independently and keep a secure fit on the trail. Some trail models, for example the Salomon XA Pro 3D, use quick-pull systems that eliminate tying and speed up transitions.
