Gray Bike Shop Essentials

Look for a compact steel-built multi-tool that covers common hex sizes (typically 2mm–12mm) and includes a chain breaker for trail-side repairs. Park Tool and similar makers build durable options that balance weight for road riders while still handling gravel and MTB needs.

Floor pumps with large, easy-to-read gauges (PSI or bar) and foot pegs work well in a home workshop, while compact hand pumps or CO2 cartridges are better for minimalist road setups. Electric inflators can save time when dealing with high-volume tires on gravel or e-bikes.

For bikepacking and gravel rides, pack a tubeless repair kit with plugs, a valve core remover, and a sealant injector so you can reseal a puncture on the trail. Larger hand pumps suited to high-volume tires are preferable to tiny road pumps for inflating tubeless setups.

Mechanic gloves should fit snugly to preserve dexterity for fine tasks while still offering coverage across the palm and fingers. Polyurethane-coated palms offer grip and protection from grease, so follow sizing guides to maintain feel when handling small bolts and cables.

Trail-side chain repairs usually require a chain pin removal tool or integrated chain breaker plus a good chain lubricant and synthetic-bristle chain brush for cleaning. Park Tool makes reliable chain tools, and carrying an Allen set (2mm–12mm) and a T25 Torx wrench covers most bolts you'll encounter.
