Flat shoes are best for casual, trail, or technical riding where easy on-and-off and grippy rubber outsoles matter, while clipless shoes boost pedaling efficiency and power transfer with recessed cleat options for walking. Consider whether you want a sticky flat sole for platform pedals or a 2-bolt or 3-bolt clip system for clipped-in performance.

Sizing runs narrow and is listed in European sizes from 35 to 52, so try them on and convert to US or UK sizes as needed; road shoes tend to run a snug, performance fit with a minimal toe box. Mountain and recreational shoes offer a wider toe box and better walkability, which can be more comfortable for tours or gravel rides.

MTB and recreational shoes commonly use a 2-bolt system (SPD standard) with options from Crank Brothers or Speedplay that give recessed cleats for easier walking. Road shoes use 3-bolt patterns like Look, SPD-SL, or Time for maximum stiffness, and indoor cycling shoes often keep recessed cleats to avoid floor damage.

For road racing you’ll want a very stiff sole—carbon-fiber or fiberglass composites score high on Shimano’s stiffness scale (top models hit about 10–13/15) to maximize power transfer, as seen in shoes like the Shimano S-Phyre RC903. Trail and flat-pedal shoes favor more flexible, grippy soles and reinforced toes for better control and walking comfort.

Touring and commuting shoes should balance walkability and durability with features like synthetic leather or mesh uppers and recessed cleats for off-bike comfort. For warm weather, SPD-compatible sandals—such as those from Keen with toe protection—offer ventilation plus the option to clip in, and reinforced or sticky rubber outsoles help with traction.
