Gray Alpine Touring

Match the ski to how much uphill versus descent you plan to do: lighter, ascent-oriented skis (72–88mm waist, 800–1300g per ski) favor fast climbs, while allround skis (82–95mm, 1200–1400g) balance skinning and carving. Models like the Dynastar M-Tour 86 or agile Black Crows allround designs are good examples if you want versatility on varied terrain.

Tech/pin bindings are the best choice when uphill efficiency matters because they’re the lightest and often adjustable for release; race-style tech units can be under 130g, while frame bindings are heavier and better for alpine-compatible boots. Make sure the binding is compatible with your boot sole standard (ISO 9523) and that the unit offers an appropriate release range for your skiing.

Sizing touring boots is about balancing downhill support and uphill mobility, so consider models with walk-mode cuffs and the right flex for your weight and skiing style. Lightweight 2–3 buckle or BOA options around 1300g are great for agile days, and hybrid alpine-tour boots with Grilamid or carbon cuffs add stiffness for better control.

Synthetic skins tend to be more durable and glide better in wet or variable conditions, while mohair offers superior grip and lighter weight for long climbs; many skiers opt for a mixed material or pre-cut skins to get both benefits. Pre-cut skins save time during transitions and are a handy feature when conditions are changing quickly.

Always carry a three-piece rescue kit: a digital transceiver (3-antenna recommended) with battery levels at or above 85%, a metal shovel, and a probe of at least 240cm for effective companion rescue. Packaged sets like the Mammut Barryvox Package include a reliable transceiver, a 240cm probe, and a shovel, which simplifies making sure you have compatible, tested gear.
