Blue Ski Boots for Downhill & Backcountry

If you plan lots of uphill, ultra-light AT boots prioritize efficiency with lower weight and up to 40+ degrees of walk mode mobility for long multi-day tours. All-round AT suits mixed backcountry and soft snow while performance AT offers stiffer flex (around 130+) for aggressive descents; models like the Salomon S/Pro 120 GW sit toward the all-mountain end of that spectrum.

Try boots on with thick ski socks and check the last width and calf height for comfort. Low-volume lasts are around 98–100mm, mid-volume 102–106mm, and high-volume 106mm+, and many models include moldable liners to fine-tune fit.

Different soles change both walkability and what bindings you can use: Alpine ISO 5355 is for traditional downhill bindings, GripWalk (ISO 23223) adds lugged grip but requires compatible bindings, and Touring ISO 9523 fits tech/pin bindings. Vibram or lugged GripWalk soles also improve traction for approach and bootpacking.

Aim for at least 40+ degrees of walk mode for efficient uphill travel, and touring-focused boots can offer up to 60 degrees for alpine climbs. More range makes hiking and skinning far easier, but higher walk mobility can come with a softer cuff or lighter shell that slightly changes downhill feel.

Lighter materials like carbon fiber or Pebax reduce weight (many mid-range boots sit around 1400–1600g) and make long approaches easier, while stiffer plastics such as Pebax or Grilamid and a robust shell improve downhill power transfer. For example, freeride-focused models like the Atomic Hawx Prime 130 S use stiffer constructions for aggressive skiing, whereas ultra-light touring boots trade some downhill stiffness to save kilos.
